About

Mobile engineer with a builder's mindset

When I'm not running marathons (or podcasting about them!) I'm usually diving deep into technology and how it can improve our daily lives. I hold a BSc in Computer Science & Engineering and an MSc in Information Systems & Computer Engineering, with a master's thesis done in collaboration with the Portuguese Air Force.

After more than three years as a consultant — across the financial, legal and social-security sectors — I set my sights on the fast-growing mobile space and, largely self-taught, began building iOS apps both personally and professionally. Since then I've worked for companies across Europe and the United States.

Most notably, I helped bring the investment experience to life on the Marcus by Goldman Sachs app and, in 2021, was a founding engineer at Domain Money, a fintech blending traditional investing with crypto. As a Senior iOS Engineer at Morsum I helped build and scale Ancho.vi, one of the largest Food Operating Systems in the US. More recently I've been leading the mobile team at SumerSports, working hands-on with cutting-edge tech such as ARKit and LiDAR.

Domain Money offers professionally managed portfolios designed for long-term growth.

As a founding engineer I helped bring this app to reality from scratch. It was featured multiple times by Apple, holds a 4.8 rating and near crash-free performance.

Among other things I helped build the investment experience and spearheaded the referrals system. More recently I brought real-time pricing and persistence to the app using sockets.

Marcus by Goldman Sachs offers personal finance tools to help users save, borrow and invest.

Worked on the Marcus iOS app focusing mostly on the investment flows. Serving millions of users, the app achieved a 99.9% crash-free rate and a 4.9 rating on the App Store.

Overhauled other parts of the app — specifically the transfers experience, through which millions of dollars flow every day.

Incêndios Directo — real-time wildfire info for Portugal

Incêndios Directo provides real-time info on active wildfires in Portugal. At peak times it was used by more than 2,000 users daily and received great feedback all around — even from firefighters.

Being able to help, even a tiny bit, with their selfless and incredible work was more than I could ask for when developing the app.

TrueEffort — grade-adjusted race planner

A grade-adjusted race planner I designed, built and ship on both iOS and Android. Instead of splitting your goal time evenly across the distance, TrueEffort uses a scientifically validated gradient-adjusted pace model to prescribe a speed for every segment — so your effort stays consistent over the hills, not just your pace.

Import a route file (GPX, FIT, TCX or KML) from Strava, Garmin or your GPS watch, set a time or pace objective, and get a full split-by-split plan alongside elevation, gradient and climb analysis.

TrueEffort Pro adds race-day weather with per-segment wind effects, multiple goals (A/B/C) to compare strategies, and PDF export.

Every race deserves a plan. Race Pace Calculator helps runners find the pace, time or distance they need — instantly — so they can stop doing mental math and focus on running. Designed and built solo, from scratch to the App Store.

Features: enter any two of pace, time or distance to get the third; one-tap 5K, 10K, half and full marathon; km/mile toggle; and a speed-to-pace chart (KPH, MPH, min/km, min/mile) with tap-to-highlight rows and reorderable columns — all in a dark theme.

Nursing App (October 2017, pimentaGroup) — Displays custom content related to the job and offers knowledge and assertion tests. Solo development from scratch, delivery and support. Features: Swift, fully customized UX/UI, REST API, offline capabilities & reachability, custom UI transitions, deeplinking, AVPlayer, Fabric, Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager.

Geotracking App (November 2017, pimentaGroup) — Lets the user track their GPS devices and establish geofences. Helped midway, as a solo developer, on bug fixing, delivery and continuous support, then performed a 2.0 overhaul and delivered it. Features: Swift, REST API, push notifications (APN), custom UI & transitions, MapKit, GPS & user location, localisation (German & English), reachability.

Chat & LIVE video — Customisation of a chat app (Rocket.Chat) to company needs, integrating an external live-video suite (Jitsi). Collaborated with both development teams. Features: audio recording, UI elements.

Social / fun app — Group recording and sending of videos to celebrate special occasions. Helped midway, as solo developer, to fix bugs and perform an app overhaul, then deliver and support. Features: Objective-C, REST API, social login, custom UI/UX, sharing.

To-Do Lists — A to-do app letting users customise lists and todos. Analysis, process management, built from scratch and delivered. Mentored a student through development. Features: Swift, Firebase, custom UI/UX & transitions, local notifications, social login.

Other Work

Node.js (March 2015) — Interested in web development, I started with JavaScript and discovered Node and the possibilities of running JavaScript on a server. I've since built personal projects, including a sports-schedule app that runs great on mobile (fun fact: it runs on a simple Raspberry Pi!).

MongoDB (March 2015) — Keeping everything in the JavaScript ecosystem, I learned a non-relational database and earned a basic certification directly with the MongoDB team.

Throughout my academic and professional career I've also worked with many other technologies and platforms — in no particular order: Java, JavaScript, AngularJS, HTML5, CSS, SQL Server, Oracle DB, Python, various IBM suites (IBM BPM, ODM, IID), Git, Jira and Pivotal Tracker.

A couple of years ago I started toying around with an old camera and haven't stopped since! Photography is a great hobby — it makes you stop and appreciate the world around you, both big and small. It's also an amazing way to travel and discover new places.

Running

Running

I absolutely love to run — it's now an integral part of my life and I can't go without it. I've run two marathons and many half-marathons and 10Ks, and I plan to run the six World Marathon Majors. Wish me luck!
